Trophoblastic disease is a mass of abnormal tissue inside the uterus during pregnancy. This abnormal tissue prevents the normal growth of a fetus.
Treatment is needed to remove the abnormal tissue. Sometimes after the abnormal tissue is removed, it continues to grow in the uterus. This is called gestational trophoblastic neoplasia. It is a form of cancer that can develop from the abnormal tissue. Trophoblastic cancer can remain in the uterus or spread to other parts of the body.
